Frequently Asked Questions about core scanners

Scanning drill cores is useful when a detailed analysis of the geological composition is required. It helps to assemble drill cores precisely and fully automatically into a complete borehole and to archive the results digitally. By digitising the drill cores, researchers and engineers can efficiently evaluate and record the data. It also makes it easier to access historical borehole data and compare it with data from other boreholes. Digitisation also protects the physical drill cores from damage and loss and eliminates the need to transport them.

Scanning drill cores can provide valuable information about the geological characteristics of an area. This includes analysing rock composition, stratification and any fossils. Scanning also helps to identify mineral concentrations and structural features such as fractures or porosity. This data is important for planning construction projects, exploring for raw materials or coordinating further deep drilling.

The scanning of drill cores begins with the removal of the core from the borehole. The core is then cleaned and prepared. It is subsequently placed in a specialised scanner, which produces high-resolution images of the drill core, including 360° images if required. These images are digitised and archived in a database. Digitisation makes it easy to record the data and use it for later analysis. The scanned images provide a detailed view of the geological strata and assist in analysing soil conditions.

ANCORELOG is a multi-sensor technology for the automated, high-resolution analysis of drill cores. The system combines various sensor technologies within an integrated platform, enabling the rapid, standardised and reproducible acquisition of geological, geotechnical and mineralogical data.

Companies gain access to data sets for exploration, mining, geotechnical and infrastructure projects, whilst simultaneously achieving greater efficiency and improved data quality.

ANCORELOG combines several measurement methods within a single digital workflow. Depending on the configuration, optical, geochemical, physical and structural properties of drill cores can be recorded and analysed.

The combination of different sensors creates a comprehensive digital representation of the drill core, which provides significantly more information than individual analysis methods.
