Facility-based water protection in accordance with the German regulations on Installations for the Handling of Substances Hazardous to Water

Inspections, reports and certificates – all from a single source

Request advice on water protection

The Ordinance on Installations for the Handling of Substances Hazardous to Water sets out the requirements nationwide for the planning, construction, operation and inspection of such installations.

The Ordinance on Installations for the Handling of Substances Hazardous to Water (AwSV) sets out the requirements nationwide for the planning, construction, operation and inspection of such installations. Operators are obliged to demonstrate compliance with these requirements.

With DMT, you receive all services relating to facility-based water protection from a single source. Our experts support you every step of the way – from preliminary conformity checks and condition assessments right through to the preparation of legally compliant reports and training for your staff. This enables you to ensure transparency, enhance facility safety and reliably fulfil your legal obligations.

Why inspections compliant with national regulations are important

Installations containing substances that pose a risk to water must comply with statutory requirements at all times. Regular inspections, leak-tightness tests and technical documentation help to identify risks at an early stage and maintain safe operation.

DMT supports operators in the assessment, inspection and documentation of their installations. Our experts produce transparent and TÜV-approved certificates for use by regulatory authorities, insurance companies and in the licensing process.

What you should know

Frequently Asked Questions on Plant-Related Water Protection (AwSV)

The AwSV applies to all installations in which water-polluting substances are handled, regardless of whether they are newly built, modified or have been in operation for years. Statutory requirements apply right from the planning stage and during new construction, as well as during conversion, refurbishment and decommissioning. DMT assesses at an early stage whether your facility is subject to the AwSV and supports you with all necessary measures, from classification and testing through to documentation.

Any breach of the AwSV – for example, due to a lack of leak-tightness certificates or failure to meet deadlines – may result in fines, operating bans or, in the event of damage, even criminal consequences. DMT assesses the current condition of your system, produces legally compliant test reports and helps to rectify any potential shortcomings – fully documented and TÜV-approved.

Existing installations are also subject to the AwSV, particularly in the event of alterations, refurbishments or where proof of watertightness is lacking. Since 2017, uniform regulations have been in force nationwide governing testing, documentation and, where necessary, refurbishment. DMT checks your existing system for compliance with the AwSV, produces legally compliant reports and provides comprehensive support with refurbishment and documentation from a single source.

Regulatory authorities require expert inspection reports in accordance with Section 47 of the AwSV. These are crucial for continued operation or the granting of licences. DMT produces comprehensive, TÜV-approved inspection reports for your AwSV installation, including retroactive reports for existing installations.

AwSV requirements must be taken into account right from the planning stage, such as retention volumes, materials and testing requirements. The construction work itself is also subject to specific requirements. DMT supports you right from the planning stage with preliminary conformity assessments, on-site monitoring during construction and subsequent commissioning tests to ensure compliance with deadlines and regulatory requirements.

Flat-bottomed tanks are often safety-critical points in production and logistics chains. Depending on their use, they are subject to stringent inspection requirements. These include internal inspections, zero-level inspections and classification in accordance with TRwS 788 or DWA-A 788. For example, the shortest inspection interval is two and a half years for the internal inspection of Tank Type I (unprotected). DMT’s experts carry out legally compliant and documented inspections, assessments and the determination of inspection intervals, thereby helping to avoid liability risks and operational disruptions.

Technical and managerial staff must be trained in how to comply with AwSV requirements. This minimises risks and safeguards operational processes. DMT offers bespoke, practical on-site workshops, for example for ‘qualified planners in accordance with AwSV’.
