S Please do not hesitate to contact us if you require assistance with any aspect of coke production.
We support companies with all matters relating to coking behaviour, coal blends and coke quality. Our work is based on standardised test procedures, our own pilot plants and extensive data sets drawn from more than seven decades of industrial and semi-technical coking trials.
Our range of services includes:

Optimisation of coal blends
The quality of coke is largely determined by the composition of the coal blend. DMT develops and evaluates coal blends for various operating conditions in coking plants and blast furnaces.
By combining many years of experience, modern analytical methods and extensive test data, we identify blend variants that offer the optimal balance of quality, process stability and cost-effectiveness. Our analyses are suitable for both conventional bulk-feed systems and rammed-bed operating concepts.
10-kg retort for rapid coking tests
Our 10-kg retort enables rapid and cost-effective coking tests to be carried out even with small quantities of coal. The system provides information on:
In addition, we use data-driven models and AI-supported analysis methods to predict outcomes for semi-technical and industrial plants more reliably. This gives our customers the confidence to make informed decisions at an early stage regarding raw material procurement and production planning.
Industry-relevant simulation of real coking plant conditions
Our semi-technical pilot coke oven realistically replicates the conditions found in industrial coking plants. The refractory silicate lining and heating channels with industrial cross-sections ensure heat transfer conditions comparable to those in large-scale industrial plants.
The quantities of coke produced enable comprehensive quality testing in accordance with international standards for:
Quality assurance for coal and coke
Consistent coke quality plays a key role in the efficiency and stability of blast furnace processes. DMT supports operators by carrying out continuous analyses and tests in accordance with international standards.
Our services include:
We carry out tests in accordance with ISO and ASTM standards:
We assist companies worldwide in the objective assessment of their coke properties and are fully equipped to carry out standardised coke tests in accordance with:
We provide comprehensive information on the quality and suitability of coking coals for iron production to raw materials traders, steelworks and coking plants.
In addition to standard coal analysis and petrography, we carry out targeted investigations into the coking properties of coking coals.
Our testing methods include:
The optimisation of coal blends is designed to achieve the desired coke quality whilst ensuring high process stability and cost-effectiveness. This involves the targeted combination of different coal grades, which are then evaluated through laboratory and coking trials.
Pilot-scale coking tests enable a realistic assessment of new coals and coal blends. Companies obtain reliable data for subsequent industrial application before larger quantities of raw materials are used.
CRI (Coke Reactivity Index) describes the reactivity of coke towards carbon dioxide. CSR (Coke Strength after Reaction) assesses the strength of the coke following this reaction. Both parameters are important quality indicators for use in blast furnaces.
The characterisation of coking coal includes, amongst other things, the free swelling index, Gieseler fluidity, dilatation, the Roga index, the Gray-King test, as well as petrographic and chemical analyses.
These services are aimed at coking plants, steelworks, raw materials companies, mining companies, raw materials traders and research institutions that wish to evaluate and optimise coal, coal blends or coke.
