Geological Modelling of Deposits

Resource and reserve estimates using DMT

Geologische Modellierung von Lagerstätten

Geological models form the basis for the assessment of mineral deposits and support decision-making in exploration, mine planning and mining operations. DMT produces 3D geological models, block models and resource and reserve estimates for mining companies, exploration companies, investors and project developers worldwide.

By combining geological expertise, digital modelling and geostatistical methods, we create transparent decision-making frameworks that meet technical, economic and regulatory requirements.

From exploration data to a digital deposit model

Mineral deposits often feature complex structures, different mineralisation zones and varying ore grades. To represent these relationships, we integrate geological and operational data into a consistent digital model.

Depending on the project, we take into account, amongst other things:

  • Drilling data
  • Sample and laboratory analyses
  • Geological mapping
  • Geophysical data
  • Production data
  • Historical exploration information

Our interdisciplinary teams of geoscientists and engineering specialists analyse, validate and interpret this data. Based on this, we create 3D geological models and block models that realistically depict the geometry, quality and spatial distribution of a mineral deposit.

Areas of application for geological modelling

Geological models are used, amongst other things, to assist with:

  • Resource and reserve estimates
  • Exploration planning and drilling programmes
  • Preliminary and feasibility studies
  • Mine planning and production optimisation
  • Selection of suitable mining methods
  • Investment and financing decisions
  • Technical reporting
  • Independent audits and due diligence reviews

Resource and reserve estimation in accordance with international standards

A resource estimate requires high-quality data, transparent assumptions and the application of internationally recognised standards.

DMT provides support for assessment and reporting in accordance with:

  • the JORC Code
  • CIM Standards
  • PERC Reporting Standard
  • SEC S-K 1300
  • SAMREC Code
  • other national and international regulatory frameworks

The results provide transparency for investors, regulatory authorities, financiers and project managers, and form the basis for technical assessments and capital market requirements.

In addition, DMT carries out independent resource and reserve audits. These help to identify data gaps, review valuation methods and enhance the traceability of existing models.

Geostatistical analyses and block modelling

Geostatistical methods enable the assessment of the spatial distribution of ore grades and other geologically relevant parameters. Based on statistical analyses and geological interpretations, well-founded estimates can be made between individual boreholes or sampling points.

Our services include:

  • Statistical and geostatistical analyses
  • Variography and ore grade modelling
  • Block modelling
  • QA/QC validation
  • Data management
  • Uncertainty and sensitivity analyses
  • Resource and reserve estimates
  • Technical reporting in accordance with international standards

The models support a transparent assessment of the quantity, quality and economic potential of a mineral deposit.

Digital modelling using established specialist software

DMT utilises leading software solutions from the international mining and commodities industry. The selection of tools is project-specific and depends on the type of deposit, the available data and the project objectives.

The software portfolio used includes, amongst others:

  • SURPAC
  • Datamine
  • Vulcan
  • MineSight
  • Minex
  • PETREL
  • GoCad
  • Whittle
  • AutoCAD

This enables geological models, resource assessments and planning data to be seamlessly integrated into downstream processes.

Experience with different types of deposits

DMT has many years’ experience in modelling and evaluating a wide variety of mineral deposits. These include:

  • Iron and non-ferrous metals
  • Precious metals
  • Lignite and hard coal
  • Industrial minerals
  • Gas deposits
  • Oil sands

Frequently Asked Questions on Geological Reservoir Modelling

Geological deposit modelling digitally represents the structure, geometry and distribution of minerals within a deposit. It provides the basis for resource and reserve estimates, as well as for mine planning and investment decisions.

Typical data sources include drill core data, sample analyses, geological mapping, geophysical surveys, and production and exploration data.

Reserves and grades are estimated through geological interpretation, geostatistical analyses and block modelling, and are assessed in accordance with international standards.

A block model divides a deposit into spatial units. Geological, technical and economic properties are assigned to each block in order to calculate resources and reserves.

Depending on the project requirements, valuations are carried out in accordance with, for example, JORC, CIM, PERC, SAMREC, SEC S-K 1300 or other recognised international reporting standards.
