From Exploration to a 3D Deposit Model

The evaluation of a lignite deposit begins with the systematic collection of geological, geophysical, geotechnical and hydrogeological data. This information forms the basis for the development of detailed three-dimensional subsurface models.

Our experts integrate drilling data, borehole measurements, seismic data and other geophysical information into digital deposit models. This enables seams, faults and other geological structures to be accurately represented and quantified.

Among other things, the models are used for:

  • Calculation of resources and reserves
  • Support for feasibility studies
  • Assessment of technical and economic risks
  • Planning of future mining activities
  • Optimisation of exploration and appraisal programmes

Deposit Modeling for Lignite

We use modern software solutions such as Petrel® to interpret lignite deposits. In doing so, we integrate data from 2D and 3D seismic surveys, boreholes and borehole measurements to create a consistent digital subsurface model.

Within the resulting block models, geological, petrophysical and quality-related parameters can be spatially distributed and statistically analysed. This enables a robust resource estimate as well as a transparent assessment of the deposit in accordance with internationally recognised standards.

Digital modelling increases planning reliability and provides a robust basis for investment decisions and subsequent mining planning.

Optimized Drilling Planning Based on Digital Models

Precise 3D models enable the targeted planning of exploration and confirmation drilling. Based on the deposit model, we define suitable drilling entry points and optimal drilling paths.

Close collaboration with drilling contractors ensures that the information gained is maximised and that available resources are used efficiently. In this way, we help our clients to reduce uncertainties and develop projects in a cost-effective manner.

From exploration to 3D deposit modeling to resource classification, we support you with geoscientific expertise, digitalization, and internationally recognized standards.

What You Should Know

Frequently Asked Questions on the Exploration and Appraisal of Lignite Deposits

A lignite deposit is a geological occurrence of lignite that is investigated and assessed in terms of its size, quality and economic viability.

The assessment is based on drilling, geophysical surveys, geological analyses and digital 3D deposit models. Resources and economic potential are derived from these.

3D models enable the spatial representation of ore bodies and geological structures. They improve resource estimates, risk assessments and the planning of drilling and mining projects.

Internationally, the JORC Code, NI 43-101 and the USGS Resource Classification Programme, amongst others, are used for the classification of resources.

Typical data sources include boreholes, core samples, geological mapping, seismic surveys, gravimetry, magnetic surveys, geoelectric surveys, and hydrogeological and geotechnical investigations.
