Physical separation, chemical extraction and refining

Mineral processing focuses on physical separation to enhance the value of minerals, ores and coal through enrichment, purification and processing, whilst hydrometallurgy and pyrometallurgy involve chemical extraction and refining.

DMT supports all aspects of mineral processing and metallurgy, from the initial sampling of ore minerals and pilot-scale testing through to front-end engineering, design, construction, commissioning, operation and maintenance. We provide processing systems for crushing, classification, separation, waste disposal, agglomeration, as well as hydrometallurgy and pyrometallurgy.

‘The profitability of a raw materials project is not determined at the production stage, but rather at the very outset, when choosing the right processing and metallurgical concepts.’

DMT for Ore Processing and Metallurgy

Expertise, consultancy, studies and assessments in metallurgy

Our experts provide advice on cost-effective and environmentally sound applications in mineral processing and metallurgy. We take into account and cater for the entire spectrum of minerals, metals and energy sources, and support the entire life cycle of a mine, from planning through to operation and decommissioning. An overview of our services:

Preliminary tests for processing or metallurgy

  • Planning and monitoring of mineral samples
  • Release studies for complex ores
  • Laboratory- and pilot-scale tests

Process development

  • Development of process blocks and flowcharts
  • Development of mass, water and metal balances
  • Modelling of complex processes
  • Process optimisation

Design and engineering

  • Sizing and specification of plant
  • Automation and process control
  • Water management
  • Waste rock treatment
  • Basic and detailed planning (Front-End Engineering and Design (FEED) studies)
  • Maintenance strategies
  • Optimisation of industrial plants

Economic and environmental assessment

  • Assessment of capital costs
  • Assessment of operating costs
  • Environmental impact assessments
  • ESG-focused operations and waste rock management

Prior to the full development of the mine, our sampling planning and monitoring services help to inform key investment decisions by analysing a small, representative sample of the larger ore body to obtain an unbiased assessment of the ore grade, mineral content and potential economic value of the mineral resource for processing purposes.

Coal processing – Coal beneficiation for coking technology

Our consultancy services in the field of processing and mineral processing also include coal processing. Coal processing is an integral part of coal production. DMT offers consultancy services for coal processing plants and supports them with process planning and optimisation. Removing impurities from raw ore (ROM) increases the value of the coal and reduces transport costs. More importantly, however, it ensures that customers’ quality and processing requirements can be met.

DMT possesses a wide range of technical expertise covering most coal processing methods, including coal washing, coal briquetting and coal pyrolysis. Our experience in coke production is exceptional, and we offer a comprehensive range of services, ranging from mining consultancy and mineral testing and evaluation to the design and construction of coking plants.

We invest heavily in research and development to optimise the performance of coking plants, techniques and instruments for reducing emissions and improving coal blends and coke quality. Please also visit our Engineering section.
