The Ordinance on Installations for the Handling of Substances Hazardous to Water (AwSV) requires operators to have their installations inspected regularly by authorised experts. We carry out AwSV inspections in accordance with Section 46 of the AwSV for installations handling substances hazardous to water. Our experts assess the legal and technical requirements of your facility. Upon completion of the inspection, operators receive a legally compliant inspection report containing an assessment of the facility, documented findings and, where necessary, measures required to rectify any defects.

With DMT, you receive all services relating to facility-based water protection from a single source: from AwSV inspections and the assessment of sealed surfaces and retention facilities right through to remediation plans and training for operational staff.

Our experts support you in identifying risks at an early stage, reliably fulfilling your operational obligations and ensuring the long-term operational and legal security of your facilities.

AwSV inspection or AwSV report?

How AwSV inspections and AwSV reports differ:

The AwSV inspection serves as the legally required proof that a facility complies with the requirements of the Ordinance on Facilities for the Handling of Substances Hazardous to Water (AwSV).

It should be distinguished from AwSV expert reports: whilst the AwSV inspection assesses and documents the current condition, we also provide additional support where required in the form of technical reports, supporting documentation and remediation plans.

AwSV inspections in accordance with Section 46 of the AwSV

For many installations containing substances that pose a risk to water, initial and periodic inspections are required by law. The purpose of the inspection is to demonstrate that the installation complies with water law requirements and does not pose a risk to soil or water bodies.

The inspection consists of two parts:

Compliance inspection

As part of the compliance inspection, our experts assess, amongst other things:

  • Notifications pursuant to Section 40 of the AwSV
  • Planning permissions
  • Permits and notifications under the Federal Immission Control Act (BImSchG)
  • Declarations of suitability
  • Plant documentation in accordance with Section 43 of the AwSV
  • Plant demarcation in accordance with Section 14 of the AwSV
  • Pressurisation and maintenance plans
  • Operating instructions in accordance with Section 44(1) of the AwSV
  • Evidence of training for operating personnel in accordance with Section 44(2) of the AwSV
  • Risk assessments and risk evaluations of pipework in accordance with Section 21(1) of the AwSV and TRwS 780-1
  • Certificates of suitability for use under building and water legislation for the construction products used
  • Evidence of the suitability for use of the construction types employed

Technical inspection

During the technical inspection, our experts assess the condition, safety and functionality of the installation. This includes, for example:

  • External and, where applicable, internal inspection of tanks, vessels, equipment and pipework
  • Assessment of stability, safety in use, durability and leak-tightness
  • Checking for the detectability of potential leaks
  • Estimation of the service life of existing installations based on non-destructive testing methods and specific inspections
  • Plausibility checks on safety devices and alarm and interlock systems
  • Functional testing of safety-critical sensor-actuator chains, for example:
    • Overfill protection systems
    • Leakage monitoring systems
    • TRGS 509
  • Condition assessment of sealing surfaces, drainage areas and retention facilities
  • Verification of required retention volumes for product spills, rainwater and fire-fighting water
  • Identification of defects and development of suitable remediation plans
  • Findings in accordance with Section 68(3) of the AwSV
