Tunnel construction projects place the highest demands on precision, alignment and quality assurance. Even minor surveying deviations can accumulate over long tunneling distances and have an impact on the construction process, costs and scheduling.

DMT supports clients, design consultancies and construction companies worldwide with high-precision surveying services for tunnel construction, pipe jacking and underground infrastructure. From establishing precise control networks to documenting the as-built conditions upon project completion, we provide engineering surveying services from a single source throughout all project phases.

With more than 3,900 successfully completed gyro campaigns, high-precision, independent orientation monitoring using the DMT-GYROMAT is one of our core competencies. We combine this with decades of experience gained from international infrastructure projects. This results in survey concepts tailored to your project, forming the basis for safe tunnelling control and a successful breakthrough.

“Whether it’s tunnel construction, pipe jacking or a complex infrastructure project: we provide the precise surveying services and digital solutions to ensure the safe delivery of your construction project.”

Precision throughout all project phases

Every tunnel project presents its own surveying challenges, depending on its length, geometry, tunnelling method and environmental conditions. Whether it’s a high-speed tunnel with minimal tolerances, tunnelling from confined shafts or adits under extreme climatic conditions: we adapt our approach to the specific situation.

Our services are utilised in conventional and mechanised tunnelling, as well as in pipe jacking, mining and complex infrastructure projects. We develop each surveying concept on a project-by-project basis: tailored to the client’s specifications and the on-site conditions, and seamlessly integrated into the construction process.

Gyroscopic control surveying using the DMT-Gyromat

The precise alignment of a tunnel network is crucial for the safe management of tunnelling operations and a successful breakthrough. At the same time, all surveying work is carried out under challenging conditions: temperature variations, dust, humidity and confined spaces all affect measurement accuracy. This makes regular, independent checks of the surveying network all the more important to ensure that the required tolerances are reliably maintained.

DMT uses precision survey gyros from its own DMT-GYROMAT series for this purpose. These enable the completely independent, high-precision determination of azimuths, which can be used to systematically check the existing tunnel network. This makes them the ultimate monitoring instrument: absolutely reliable even under the harsh operating conditions found in tunnels and mines.

Through the combination of precise gyroscopic measurements, regular monitoring and project-specific accuracy forecasts, deviations can be detected at an early stage and minimised in a targeted manner.

Frequently Asked Questions on Tunnel Surveying

Tunnel surveying encompasses all geodetic work involved in determining the position, elevation and orientation of a tunnel structure. It ensures that the design and construction are carried out with the required accuracy.

Depending on the project, techniques such as GNSS surveying, tachymetry, traverse surveying, laser scanning and gyroscopic surveying are used, amongst others. The choice of technique depends on the required levels of accuracy, the tunnel geometry and the project-specific constraints.

A geodetic control network is a precisely defined network of reference points. It serves as a stable basis for all further surveying work and enables underground measurements to be reliably linked to above-ground coordinate systems.

We support tunnel construction, pipe jacking, mining and infrastructure projects. Our services range from the planning of the measurement concept through to construction, final acceptance and as-built documentation.
