Steel structure design

Designing steel structures for industrial projects

Plant design/detailed engineering/designing steel structures

Steel structural engineering at DMT: Efficient planning and implementation for the process industry

As part of plant design, particularly for ECPM projects, DMT also carries out the steelwork itself. Our expertise covers a wide range of steel structures tailored to the typical requirements of the chemical and petrochemical industries.

Types of steel structures

DMT designs the following types of steel structures:

  • Support structures for outdoor systems: These structures provide the necessary support for system components installed outdoors.
  • Stair towers, work platforms and platforms: These structures ensure safe access and efficient working conditions for staff.
  • Steel structures for production halls: Design and construction of halls that meet the specific requirements of production.
  • Scaffolding and machinery supports: Support for the installation of machinery and technical equipment in production and engineering buildings.
  • Pipe bridges and single-pipe supports: Structures for the safe routing and support of pipework.

Structured planning process

The planning process is integrated into the overall site planning and follows standardised steps:

  1. Adoption of reference axes, reference elevations and plant north: This information is taken from the land-use plan to ensure precise planning.
  2. Installation planning: Preparation of floor plans, elevations and sections on a scale of 1:100. This planning is carried out in close coordination with process engineering, pipework design and mechanical engineering, taking maintenance aspects into account.
  3. Preparation of the steelwork overview drawing: This drawing serves as a load plan on a scale of 1:50 or as a steelwork system drawing, which is usually generated from a 3D design model. It depicts the structural system and defines the structural elements functionally, specifying dimensions and elevations.

Design planning steps

  • Structural Analysis for Steel Construction: This analysis provides the steelwork layout plan and determines the minimum section thicknesses. In consultation with the structural engineer, the final positions of the bracing and cross-bracing are determined. This information is transferred to the 3D model.
  • Manufacturing planning and assembly: Based on the steel structure system drawing and the layout plan, the manufacturing planning and assembly are usually contracted out to a specialist subcontractor. DMT ENCOS ensures detailed coordination at the interfaces as well as quality control in the form of drawing checks and approvals for production.

Compliance with standards and guidelines

When designing steel structures, DMT ENCOS takes into account all applicable national standards and guidelines, as well as requirements set out in plant-specific standards. Particular attention is paid to occupational health and safety, fire safety and ease of maintenance in order to ensure the highest standards of safety and quality.
