Plant Design/Detailed Engineering

Detailed engineering at DMT: Comprehensive planning right through to commissioning

Our detailed engineering covers all relevant engineering disciplines and planning stages right through to the commissioning of the process plant, including as part of an EPCM project where required. The time required for the construction phase is largely attributable to the detailed engineering. The scope and complexity of the detailed engineering activities depend heavily on the nature and size of the project.

What does detailed engineering involve?

Detailed engineering is an interdisciplinary process aimed at fully detailing and finalising the design packages produced by the departments involved. The key areas of work include:

  • Finalisation of the basic engineering: Refinement and confirmation of the fundamental technical specifications and designs developed during the basic engineering phase.
  • Process engineering design of plant equipment: Including strength calculations to ensure the safety and reliability of plant components.
  • Preparation of technical specifications: Detailed specifications for all technical equipment and materials required for the construction of the plant.
  • Piping design & structural analysis: Design and structural analysis of the pipework to ensure efficient and safe installation.
  • Steelwork & structural analysis: Design and structural analysis of the steel structures to ensure the structural integrity of the plant.
  • Electrical, Measurement, Control and Regulation Technology: Design of electrical, measurement, control and regulation systems to enable the automation and control of processes.
  • P&ID Flow Charts: Preparation of piping and instrumentation diagrams that detail the process flows and instrumentation.
  • Layout planning: Development of the final plant layout to ensure optimal use of the available space.
  • Documentation: Preparation of comprehensive documentation covering all aspects of the design and construction.

Interdisciplinary interdependencies in detailed engineering

Detailed planning is a highly interdisciplinary process in which many documents are interdependent. For example, pipework isometric drawings cannot be finalised until the corresponding pipework plans are available. These plans, in turn, require the final layout, the pipework and instrumentation flow diagrams, and the associated pipework route plans. The specific nominal diameters in the pipework and instrumentation flow diagrams require the hydraulic design to be finalised. New documents can lead to retrospective changes to documents that have already been created, which in turn are prerequisites for the creation of new documents.

Integration into the procurement process

The planning results from this engineering phase are fed into the procurement process in the form of tender and request for quotation documents, containing defined specifications for all technical equipment and materials required for the construction of the process plant, including installation services.
