GFZ and DMT GROUP agree to collaborate on geo-energy research

DMT GmbH & Co. KG, part of the Energy & Resources business unit of the TÜV NORD GROUP, based in Essen, and the Helmholtz Centre Potsdam – German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), Germany’s national centre for research into the solid earth, have entered into a partnership with the aim of conducting research into geoenergy.

As part of its ‘Geoenergy’ research programme, the GFZ is addressing key challenges in the technological development of geothermal energy systems. The Geoenergy & Resources unit at DMT deals with all aspects of geological and geophysical exploration, data interpretation and the assessment of mineral deposits, including for deep geothermal energy.

The GFZ and DMT have now signed a research agreement setting out their collaboration on the development of methods for site investigations using seismic and other geophysical, geological and geotechnical techniques. GFZ and DMT will also collaborate on specific site investigations – for example, in the Berlin-Brandenburg capital region, in the Odenwald, in the Czech Republic or in Switzerland. A fleet of specialised vehicles for seismic site investigation is deployed as part of research projects.

“Through this collaboration, we are pooling know-how and expertise from both research and practice,” says Prof. Dr Bodo Lehmann, Head of Geo-Energy & Resources at DMT. “We would like, for example, to develop new, innovative methods for identifying high-flow zones, particularly in crystalline rock, down to depths of 2,000 metres,” says Dr Fiorenza Deon from the GFZ.

DMT and GFZ will be at GeoTHERM in Offenburg on 29 February and 1 March 2024, Europe’s largest trade fair for geothermal energy (EDEKA Arena, stands 30 and 100). Anyone wishing to arrange a meeting is welcome to contact Simon Hannert: simon.hannert(at)dmt-group.com
