Systematic method for detecting sources of danger

PAAG and HAZOP: Detailed Systematic Hazard Analysis

The PAAG method (Predicting Deviations, Identifying Causes, Assessing Effects, Countermeasures) and HAZOP (Hazard and Operability, IEC 61882) are systematic approaches to identifying hazards in processes and systems. These methods help to recognize potential risks early and develop appropriate risk mitigation measures.

PAAG/HAZOP Procedure

1. Predicting Deviations:

  • The process or system is divided into functional units, and the intended operation of each unit is examined for possible deviations.
  • Keywords are used to identify deviations. Classic keywords include "more," "less," "as," "not," "partially," "reverse," and "otherwise."
  • The method is time-consuming, especially for complex processes with many target operations.2.

2. Identifying Causes:

  • An expert team searches for organizational and technical causes of the identified deviations.
  • Existing countermeasures are initially disregarded to ensure an unbiased analysis.

3. Assessing Effects:

  • The team discusses or calculates the possible effects of the identified scenarios.
  • Again, existing countermeasures are initially not considered to fully capture potential risks.

4. Countermeasures:

  • Finally, measures are defined to prevent the occurrence of identified scenarios or limit their effects.
  • Existing facilities and instructions are considered if they are deemed effective and sufficient.

Integration with Other Risk Assessment Methods

In practice, the PAAG method is often linked with other risk assessment methods such as ZHA (State Hazard Analysis), FMEA (Failure Mode and Effects Analysis), LOPA (Layer of Protection Analysis), and risk graphs to enable comprehensive hazard identification and assessment.
