DMT and Paul Wurth: 10 years of successful cooperation

For 10 years now two companies active in the cokemaking sector have been cooperating successfully: DMT GmbH & Co. KG, headquartered in Essen, a division of the TÜV NORD GROUP, and Paul Wurth Italia S.p.A., located in Genoa, a subsidiary of the Luxembourg-based Paul Wurth Group. Paul Wurth is specialised, among others, in the construction of coke oven batteries and coke oven machines, whereas DMT specialises in testing the raw material (coal blends) used in the coke oven and in the cleaning and treatment of the generated coke oven gas. By joining forces, complete coking plants can be designed and built.

“We both know exactly what our capabilities are,” says Dr Manfred Kaiser, Head of Industrial Engineering at DMT. “By collaborating we provide our customers a tailor-made solution for their complete project.” In the course of this cooperation, coking plant construction projects have already been completed in India and Indonesia. Currently, a new coking plant is being commissioned after three years of planning and construction for a Korean-Brazilian joint venture steelworks near the equator in Brazil. The latest joint success in project acquisition has been the order for modernising a coking plant in Spain on behalf of the world’s largest steel producer.

“A great synergy results from our complementary expertise,” explains Paul Wurth Italia’s Managing Director, Dr Thomas Hansmann. “Via DMT, Paul Wurth has easy access to the cokemaking know-how available in the Ruhr area. On the other hand, thanks to the global network of the Paul Wurth Group, we can enable DMT access to additional markets.”

On the occasion of this decade-long cooperation and to celebrate the renewal of the cooperation agreement, 25 engineers and executives of both companies met in Essen. Following an intensive information exchange on the cokemaking future, all participants got an insight into the history of cokemaking in the Ruhr area during a guided tour of the Zollverein Coking Plant, the UNESCO World Heritage Site in Essen.
